Testing New Toys

So I ordered a few different lighting products recently for my strobist set-up. Nothing fancy really, just an umbrella, lightstands, and reflectors.

Of course I had to test everything out, problem is I didn’t have a subject…except for my son. He really didn’t have much of a choice since he can hardly roll over.

Anyway, here’s a few shots. Set up is 1 Westcott shoot-through umbrella with a 430ex strobe as the main and 1 lastolite reflector as a kicker. Shot with the 50D and a loooong 24ft camera to flash sync cord (radio’s are in the mail...I hope).

Gilbert Family Portrait

So what better stuff is there to do on New years day than a portrait for some close friends.

After a fresh snow storm the night before we headed to Ashley Reservoir in Holyoke for a little sledding action. If you’ve ever been to this place before, you’ll know there are really no hills whatsoever, but we made the most of it.

Justin pushed, I photographed..and had a blast. Elora only lasted about a half an hour before she started falling asleep, so we didn’t really have a ton of time before we had to pack it up.

Kendrick Family Portrait

Thanksgiving with family is good. Thanksgiving with family and a portrait by the ocean is even better. Such was the case this past turkey day. This is my brother and his beautiful ladies, who just happen to be great models.

The weather was kind of crummy, very overcast and not much light, but we made it work. My cousin helped with reflecting what little light there was, while grandma jumped up and down behind me to get Angelica's attention. The positive part of a really cloudy day is that you don't have to contend with harsh shadows or finding that perfect spot in the shade, since everything is already in the shade.

Anyways, we had a good time and got some great shots of the growing fam.

Murray Family Portrait

So I continued my streak of weekend portraits with this one from last Sunday. We didn't spend too long doing this one, as little Janete want a whole lot to do with having her picture taken. Playing in the leaves was fun however and held her over for a little bit.

Grandpa was there to assist me, and I must say he did an excellent job reflecting the light. Its tough to keep the light on a squirmy 20 month old that just wants to run around.

Hurley Family Portrait

I did a quick portrait of my cousin-in-law (not sure if that's a real term) today. The weather was great for it and the light was perfect, with the help of my awesome wife assistant, of course.

We went to Spec Pond in Wilbraham which is really nothing special, but it was nice and open and left plenty of room to reflect/shade the sun, and it had a couple of nice backgrounds to work with.

The little guy is Owen who is almost a year old and was, for the most part, cooperative. I Set my camera to continuous shooting and AI servo focusing to keep up with all his running around. Anyway, a lot can be done in 15 minutes if you have the right family to photograph and the right assistant!
